More on teaching children hifz

http://kelasquran.blogspot.com/2009/04/learn-to-memorize-al-quran.html

"And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy to remembrance, so is there any who will remember?"
(Surah Al-Qamar, 54:17)
First of all, I want to share my experience in teaching the kids to memorize Al Quran. Insha Allah, the kids will love to read and learn more about Al Quran.
I am sure that everyone has different way of teaching the kids. I am not expert on this, but I would like to share it with others what I have been teaching for my kids and the others kids who come to my house. We know that each kid is special and different. Some kids can learn faster than other. For the kids who are not Arabic speaking is not easy to learn and memorize Al Quran.
For my kids, Arabic is their second language after English.
'Aisha radi-Allahu anha reported that the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said:"A person who recites the Qur'an, and reads it fluently, will be in the company of the obedient and noble angels, and he who reads the Qur'an haltingly and with difficulty will have a double recompense." [sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim].

I think, it is One of the miracle of Quran that we, including the kids, can memorize Book of Allah, Al Quran. I never heard people can memorize other than Al Quran.

We, as parent, has the responsibility to teach our kids. If we can not teach them, you have to find the teacher for them to learn.
At home, you should ask your kids to read Al Quran together. We always read Al Quran at night or in the morning. Sometimes, we learn together the meaning of the surah that we have been read. Alhamdulillah, the kids can khattam/finish reading Al Quran at least twice in one year. We want our kids love reading and learning Al Quran. And I want your kids, too. Insha Allah.

The mercy of Allah descends upon a house in which the Holy Qur'an is being recited and the angels of Allah enter that house to listen to the recitation of the Holy Qur'an. (reported by Abu Hurairah)

I will try to answer some questions below that my friends asked to me.

May Allah help us in teaching our kids. Ameen.

==============================================
What, When, Where, and How to memorize Al Quran
==============================================

I. What

What are the surahs that the kids need to memorize first?
The kids only want to memorize the short and easy surah for the first time, such as surah Al Fatihah and the last ten surah of Juz Amma (Surah An Nas, surah Al Falaq, surah Al Ikhlas, surah Al Lahab, surah An Nashr, surah Al Kafirun, surah Al Kawthar, Surah Al Maun, surah Quraish, ans surah Al Fil).

What are the books that we can use to teach the kids to read the Arabic?
There are several books that you can use to teach the kids learn to read the Arabic letters, such as:
1. Iqro 1-6 (from Indonesia)
2. Qaaidatun Noor (from Pakistan)
3. Kur'an Lisani Elifbasi (from Turkey). I like this book very much.
4. Others that you can find in Islamic Bookstores and Online Resources.
II. When
When do the kids start to memorize Al Quran?
You should start teaching to memorize the surah in young age (before 5) at least the kids know that surah by hearth and recognize the Arabic Alphabets.
Just think of it, when the kids start to memorize the ABC songs, the kids should memorize the Arabic Alphabets and some short surahs, too.

When is the good time for the kids to memorize?
I think it depends on the situation. But Most of the time, the good time to memorize is in the morning and before going to bed.

III. Where
Where is the best place to learn?
In Masjid or at Home.
It is good if you can find teacher who can teach the kids everyday including Sunday or Saturday. The kids need support from their parent at home to memorize Al Quran.
You should always review their memorization.
Remember that the best teacher for the kids is their own parent.
If you can not find the teacher, you can do it yourself at home. If you need help you can find it the resources online. If you are not memorizing yet, you should memorize the surah first before teaching the kids.
IV. How
How can we help the kids to memorize Al Quran?
It depends on the abilities of the kids.
1. The kids who can not read Arabic yet.
For age 3-6

If the kids do not know how to read then you should say the ayah clearly to them. You should do it many times around 10 to 15 times or more.
Try not to continue to the next ayah if the kids do not memorize the ayah that you just say it.
Keep focus on one ayah.
When they memorize the ayah, then you start teach them the meaning of that ayah. You can explain the meaning using their surrounding in their daily life in school or in house.

For age 6 and Up

If the kids just start to learn to read the Arabic, then let them read the transliteration Quran to help them faster in memorizing the Quran.
But don't forget once a while let them to read from Al Quran to memorize their surah. To let them get used to it the Arabic one.

2. The kids who can read Arabic very well.
For age 6 and Up

It is easy to memorize when the kids knew how to read the Arabic.
They will read Al Quran and memorize by themself. Our job is only to review when they finish memorize the surah.

How many ayah per day do the kids memorize?
Everyday I ask them to memorize at least one ayah, if they are doing well, I want them to do 2-3 more ayahs or maybe more.
For the kids who can read Arabic very well, they will do it at least one page a day. Yes, one page or more per day.
On the weekend, I ask the parents to review their kids memorization and I ask the kids to use the surah in their sholat.

==========================

Some suggestions that are good to remember are as following:

- the kids are easy to memorize and easy to forget. Please always review their memorization.
- each kid is special and different.
- learning Al Quran is about learning the manner/adab, too.
- learning is long process.
- memorizing Al Quran needs patient and alot of practices.
- you should give the kids special rewards each time they memorize one surah or one Juz.
- the Quran Memorization Contest is good to encourage the kids to learn more and more.

May Allah give you reward for helping the kids to learn and memorize Al Quran. Ameen.

tips on hifz - rarely found but very important

update: found this website dedicated on learning hifdh: http://www.quranhifdh.com/the-way-to-memorise/

Excerpt:

>> Do not memorize a single ayah until 2 things:

A.You've listened to one of the 4 REFRENCED SHIUKH, they are all

agreed upon to be the reference for the Qur'an of our time.

Recitors like Sudais and Shoraim are way too fast and you might

not recognize their mistakes but these 4 could point them out.

They are:
(1) 'Alee ibn 'AbdurRahmaan Al-Hudhaifee
(2) Muhammad Siddeeq Al-Minshaawee
(3) Mahmood Khaleel Al-Hosaree
(4) 'AbdulBaasit 'AbdusSamad

An-Naseeha... Preparing to Breach the Covenant

Bismillahi Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem,
Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatu,

Bismillah wa salatu wa salamu 'ala Rasoolilllah wa 'ala allihi wa sahbihi wa salam

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In these coming months leading to our upcoming class, "Breaching The Covenant" - The Tafseer of Surat-Al Baqarah, we not only have to prepare academically, but also spiritually and mentally as well.

The tafsir itself is a monumental task, and the ajr as well, is monumental.

Academically speaking, we can all read books, listen to tapes, etc. But spiritually and mentally is where we must focus our energy.

Memorizing the surah does not only accomplish all three of the categories but will help you on a Day that there will be NO help except what Allah [ta'la] has Willed.

The Prophet {salAllahu 'alaihee wa sallam} said: "Read the Qur'an, because it will intercede on behalf of its people on Yawma Al-Qiyyamah. Read Dhun Noorayn (the two lights), Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran, because they will come in the shape of two clouds, two shades or two lines of birds on Yawma Al-Qiyyamah and will argue on behalf of their people on that Day."
The Prophet {salAllahu 'alaihee wa sallam} then said,
"Read Al-Baqarah, because in having it, there is blessing, and in ignoring there is sorrow and the sorceresses cannot memorize it."(1)

And also, Abu Hurayrah {rradyAllahu 'anh} said "The Messenger of Allah sent and expedition force comprising of many men and asked each about what they memorized of the Qur’an. The Prophet {salAllahu 'alaihee wa sallam} came to one of the youngest men among them and asked him, 'What have you memorized (of the Qur'an) young man?' He said, 'I memorized such and such Surahs and also Al-Baqarah.' The Prophet {salAllahu 'alaihee wa sallam} said, 'You memorized Surat Al-Baqarah?' He said, 'Yes.' The Prophet {salAllahu 'alaihee wa sallam} said, 'Then you are their commander.' One of the noted men (or chiefs) commented, 'By Allah! I did not learn Surat Al-Baqarah, for fear that I would not be able to implement it. The Messenger of Allah {salAllahu 'alaihee wa sallam} said,

'Learn Al-Qur'an and recite it, for the example of whoever learns the Qur'an, recites it and adheres to it, is the example of a bag that is full of musk whose scent fills the air. The example of whoever learns the Qur'an and then sleeps (i.e. lazy) while the Qur'an is in his memory, is the example of a bag that has musk, but is closed tight."(2)

So the challenge is brought forth among us. Are we among those in Al-Akhirah that are part of Ashab Surat Al-Baqarah?

For Verily Allah [ta'la] mentions "And be afraid of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allah." (2:281).

Try to memorize the two surahs, and if not both, then just Al-Baqarah and try to COMPETE in doing it.

We asked the sheikh of our masjid (Masjid Ibrahim in Austin) to give us some advice in regards in how to approach in memorizing. I hope his advice was as beneficial to me is going to be to all of our brothers and sisters who are trying to memorize Al-Qur'an. :

I heard Sh.Khalid Syed say on the 18th of Muharram 1425 A.H. – March 9, 2004:
"Bismillah wa salatu wa salam 'ala Rasoolilllah wa 'ala aallihi wa sahbihi wa salam

In 1996 we were in Hungary, and there was this brother, a petroleum engineer. He memorized the whooole Qur'an by himself while still working. He would go out to work for 15 days in the field and then have 15 days off to memorize and revise his Qur'an.

One day, I and a couple of brothers decided to start memorizing and revising with him. We would have a star a week. Meaning we'd memorize 2 pages per week it would equal one star. But it wasn't t limited to just 2 pages.

Each of us would set a limit and it would equal one star.

He'd tell us, to keep your schedule no matter what, if you fall back or want to memorize more he would tell us to keep that pace. Like if you fell back one page for that week, you'd d have to memorize 2 pages the next week and you'd have to keep that pace of 2 pages a week, like that.

Anyway, I started with him and in the first week we were a big number, but after that there were only a few; you could count them with your fingers.

I, myself, would memorize and would ask the other brothers "How much have you memorized?" and would try to catch him and surpass him. (3)

When memorizing it will get very easy after you get used to it, it took me 4 months to memorize Al-Baqarah,

1 ½ months for Aal-Imran, and only 15 days for An-Nisa.

>> When memorizing take your time when revising the Qur'an.

>> For example, if you memorize 3 juz' in 6 months it would need 6

months of revision.
>> Be on your own schedule. (4)
>> Do not memorize a single ayah until 2 things:

A.You've listened to one of the 4 REFRENCED SHIUKH, they are all

agreed upon to be the reference for the Qur'an of our time.

Recitors like Sudais and Shoraim are way too fast and you might

not recognize their mistakes but these 4 could point them out.

They are:
(1) 'Alee ibn 'AbdurRahmaan Al-Hudhaifee
(2) Muhammad Siddeeq Al-Minshaawee
(3) Mahmood Khaleel Al-Hosaree
(4) 'AbdulBaasit 'AbdusSamad
(5)

BRead and Recite it to a Shiekh. It is of 2 types:
1. 'Ard - you Read what you are going to memorize for the following

week to the sheikh
2.Tasmee' - you Recite to the sheikh what you have memorized.

General Advice

>> Before you go to sleep listen to recitation, and also in the morning.
>> Memorize or Review every day, do not pass a single day without
reviewing an ayah or memorizing an ayah.

>> Do not memorize Al-Baqarah under 2 months, but review more than
2 months. The Prophet {salAllahu 'alaihee wa salalm} said: "The Qur'an will run/escape like
the camel that isn't tied properly."

>> Make your own schedule with the sheikh. Only you know what your
pace is.

>> Do not miss the schedule even if it means memorizing only ONE
ayah a day.

>> If you want to add or subtract, keep it consistent for the rest of
your schedule [i.e. if you want to add one extra page for that
week, you will now have to memorize 2 pages EVERY week
---->Consistency]

>> Keep with ONE copy of the Qur'an. (i.e. one text; have your own copy).

Qur'an is not difficult but a bounty from Allah {swt} and it needs Sincerety-Ikhlas, Du'aa, and Patience.

O'mar {radyaAllahu 'anhu} slaughtered a camel when he finished memorizing Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran. As if he had been given a newborn baby by Allah {ta'la}.

Labeed, who was considered by the Arabs during his time as one of the 'Ash'aril 'arab (Blessed Arabs) [along with Zuhair]. He was among 7 poets who was in Jahilieeyah and in Islam. He once recited a poem so beautiful that the Arabs wrote it down and hung it in Al-Ka'bah.

After he became Muslim he never said a single verse of poetry again. The people would ask him why he isn't reciting poetry anymore.

He replied: "I will never say a poem again after Allah {ta'la} honored me with Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran."

It is an honor from Allah {ta'la} and we should not waste our time. Try memorizing NOW and Allah {ta'la} will help you InshAllah. Even some of the scholars started late, like bin Hazm who was 40 years of age when he started gaining knowledge; and InshAllah have hope and make Du'a.

SubhanakAllahuma wa bihamdik Ash Hadu an La ilaaha illa Ant, astaghfiruka wa atooba ilaik."

I hope this has been helpful and I make du'a to Allah [subhanahu wa ta'la] to make it of ease for us in memorizing it only for His pleasure and sake, and may He [ta'la] cleanse our hearts from the whisperings of Shaytaan-Ar Rajeem.

Wa akhiru da'wa anil Hamdu lillha, fa inna kulli khairan deenan deen al-Islam, wa kulli khairil hadyee, Hadyee Rasoolillah. Wa salatu wa salam wa barak 'ala nabeeyeena Muhammad wa 'ala aallihee wa ashabihee wa salama tasleeman katheerah.

Wallahu 'Allam
Was-salamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu.

3.This encourages not only competition but also memorizing more.

4.HAND-MADE - meaning you made it [with your Revision Administrator or sheikh) you know your weaknesses and strengths, only YOU know how much you can memorize.

5.The sheikh mentioned that these are the TAJWEED [Tarteel not Mujawwad] recitations not the recitations where "they sing," (sarcasm of the shaykh masha'aAllah).

Congratulations Asma' for making it on the first Ramadhan!

Alhamdulillah Asma' impressed us yesterday (1 Ramadhan 1432H) by fasting successfully! This was the first time she fast and her age currently is 5 month 9 months, but she really made it!

Thanks to her Kindergarten teachers (TKB) for giving lots of information regarding soum and Ramadhan and motivate the children towards it.

Asma' told us about a sketch drama made by the teachers on the topic of sahur and breaking fast. Only she forgot to tell us about the ´Ramadhan bank´ project where children are encouraged to donate a small amount of their pocket money into a tabung. (These were part of the childrens' annual activity - Hari Sambutan Ramadhan, on the last Friday before Ramadhan)

Today I want to print a few things for the children related to Ramadhan. Hopefully I can successfully implement them. Here are the links

Menghafal Al-Qur'an Mudah Semudah mengingat Allah

Taken from a note in FB page of RENUNGAN & DAKWAH ISLAM

BISMILLAHIRRAHMANIRRAHIM..

13 Teknik Mudah Menghafal Al Qur'an:
  1. Niat Ikhlas
  2. Memilih waktu dan Tempat
  3. Satu Mushaf
  4. Tahsin sebelum menghafal
  5. merasakan keagungan Al-Qur'an
  6. menghafal secara teratur
  7. Menghafal secara tartil
  8. Memperhatikan tulisan ayat saat menghafal
  9. Teliti ayat mutasyabih
  10. Mencari Ustadz
  11. Motivasi & disiplin
  12. mengamalkan al-Qur'an
  13. Berdo'a

(QS>54:17)
Bersabda Rasulullah SAW: "Jagalah Al-Qur'an itu (dengan banyak membaca) demi llah Al-Qur'an itu lebih cepat hilangnya daripada onta dalam ikatannya." (Muttafaqun alaihi)

(HR.AN-Nasai)

Kisah sahabat Ali ra. dapat dijadikan pelajaran para pendekar Al-Qur'an setiap zaman. Suatu ketika Ali merasakan keterlambatan dalam menghafal, kemudian Rasulullah SAW mengajarkan do'a:
(HR.Ibnu Sunni)

Why do we read Quran, even if we can't understand a single Arabic word????

Why do we read Quran, even if we can't understand a single Arabic word????

  This is a beautiful story.

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur'an do?"

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.

The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just aganot trying hard enough," and he went out the door to watch the boy try in.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"

"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket."

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.

Son, that's what happens when you read the Qur'an . You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out when you read time by time . That is the work of Allah in our lives...."
